Founded in 1984, the Canberra Capitals first competed in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) in the 1986 season, were revitalised in the late nineties to dominate the competition, winning more WNBL Grand Finals (1999/2000, 2001/2002, 2002/2003, 2005/2006, 2006/2007, 2008/2009 and 2009/2010) than any team in the league's history.

They are the iconic team of the first decade of the 21st century and are currently Australia’s most successful women’s sporting team.

One of the world's greatest basketballers, Lauren Jackson, joined with home-grown gems and players new to Canberra under the inspirational leadership of coach Carrie Graf to make the Capitals a team of legendary drive and achievement. The Capitals are much-loved by the ACT community - women and men, girls and boys alike - who thrill each year to the team's athleticism, grit and commitment to winning for Canberra.

The Capitals have a National and International profile through the performances of its personnel and the achievements of the teams over the course of its history.
