With such a tight WNBL ladder, teams continue to battle to keep their finals hopes alive, when Round 14 tips off.


Friday night sees Canberra Capitals host the Thunder in a game the home side simply cannot lose to have any chance of playing finals, while the Bendigo Spirit travel to Adelaide for a first-versus-third showdown and the Townsville Fire and Sydney Uni compete to decide their season-series.

On Saturday night the AIS host the Bulleen Boomers, while Dandenong face ladder-leaders the Lightning at home.

The weekend rounds out with the Spirit completed their road-double against the Waves, while the Sydney Uni Flames complete the Queensland-weekend double against the Thunder.

 

Canberra Capitals vs Logan Thunder, Friday, 20 January, 7.00pm AEDT, AIS Arena

ABC TV GAME OF THE WEEK – broadcast on ABC1 on Saturday, 21 January from 1.00pm AEDT.

The Logan Thunder travel to Canberra to take on the Capitals at AIS Arena on Friday night.

Canberra had their three-game winning streak halted in heart-breaking fashion last round when they let an eight point lead slip late in the game against Bendigo to lose by one point.

The Thunder accounted for the AIS in their Round 13 contest, keeping their finals hopes alive and recording their eighth win of the season.

Canberra cannot afford to drop another game if they want to reach the finals, and after accounting for Logan in their only other meeting this season in Round Three, will come into the game confident.

Adelaide Lightning vs Bendigo Spirit, Friday, 20 January, 7.30pm ACDT, Adelaide Arena

The Bendigo Spirit travel to Adelaide on Friday night to take on the league-leading Lightning at the Adelaide Arena.

Coming off a thrilling last-second victory over the Capitals, Bendigo are on the road again facing Suzy Batkovic and the Lightning in a first-versus-third match-up.

Deanna Smith and Tess Madgen have picked up their play of late for the Spirit, but it will be Gabe Richards, who is top-ten in the league in rebounding, who will be charged with slowly Batkovic, who averages 25.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game.

Adelaide defeated the Spirit in their Round Five meeting, and will be out to win the season-series in this the second of their three meetings.

Townsville Fire vs Sydney Uni Flames, Friday, 20 January, 7.30pm AEST, Townsville RSL Stadium

The Townsville Fire host the Sydney Uni Flames at the Townsville RSL Stadium on Friday night in a fourth-versus-fifth match-up.

The Flames suffered their sixth loss of the season last weekend against the Boomers, while the Fire easily accounted for the AIS in their match.

This game will decide the all-important season-series between these sides, which is especially crucial considering their closeness on the WNBL ladder. The Flames were triumphant in their Round Six meeting, but the Fire took out their Round 11 contest, led by import Shanavia Dowdell’s Player of Week performance.

Unfortunately for the Fire, Dowdell, their leading scorer and rebounder injured her ankle early in last week’s game, and could be an omission from this contest.

AIS vs Bulleen Boomers, Saturday, 21 January, 7.00pm AEDT, AIS Training Hall

The Bulleen Boomers travel to Canberra on Saturday night to take on the AIS at the AIS Training Hall.

After accounting for the Sydney Uni Flames last Friday night, the Boomers look to consolidate second-place on the ladder against the league’s bottom side.

Liz Cambage and Rachel Jarry were instrumental in helping the Boomers to their 11th win of the season, but it was point-guard Sam Richards who controlled the contest of for the victors.

Once again the talent of the AIS shone through in patches last week, and with both Olivia Thompson and Sara Blicavs giving WNBL fans an exciting look to the future.

Dandenong Rangers vs Adelaide Lightning, Saturday, 21 January, 7.30pm AEDT, Dandenong Basketball Stadium

The Dandenong Rangers host the Adelaide Lightning at the Dandenong Basketball Stadium on Saturday night.

In the Lightning’s second game of the round they travel to take on a Rangers side desperately clinging to finals aspirations, sitting in seventh position on the ladder with a record of 9-8.

Dandenong fell to Bendigo before defeating West Coast last round, and will need to be at their best to slow the likes of Suzy Batkovic and Abby Bishop in this one. The Rangers will need a big game from their stars Jenna O’Hea and Kathleen MacLeod to keep pace in this one.

West Coast Waves vs Bendigo Spirit, Sunday, 22 January, 1.00pm WST, WA Basketball Centre

The Bendigo Spirit travel to face the West Coast Waves at the WA Basketball Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Completing the dreaded Adelaide-West Coast road double, the Spirit return to Western Australia for the second time in three rounds, looking to add to their late season finals run against one of the league’s bottom sides.

The Waves are coming off a loss to Dandenong on Sunday, but will be hoping for a good showing in what is their final home game of the season in front of their fans.

Logan Thunder vs Sydney Uni Flames, Sunday, 22 January, 2.00pm AEST, Logan Metro Stadium

WNBL Radio will be broadcasting LIVE Sunday, 22 January from 2.45pm AEDT (1.45pm Local Time). Log on to wnbl.com.au to tune in.

The final game of the round sees the Sydney Uni Flames complete their Queensland road-trip double header against the Logan Thunder on Sunday afternoon at Logan Metro Stadium.

This game will decide the season-series between the two clubs after Sydney Uni defeated Logan in Round Three, before the Thunder got revenge in Round Seven, handing the Flames their first loss of the season.

Every game is crucial for the Thunder in keeping their finals hopes alive and they will look to centre Cayla Francis, with her averages of 16.1 points and 10.6 rebounds per game to lead them to victory.
