Harrower named Player of the Week

09.02.10

Bendigo Spirit point guard Kristi Harrower has been named Player of the Week in Round 17 of the WNBL after scoring a career high 40 points on Sunday.

The 2008/09 All-Star also set a new club record with her points’ tally which is the most points scored in a single game by any player this season.

Harrower’s haul lifted the Spirit past the Perth Lynx, 74-67, at home.

The Jayco Opal drained 4-of-8 attempts from 3-point territory and turned in a clinical display at the charity stripe, converting 12-of-13 attempts at 92 per cent.

“When I hit my first couple of shots I felt like I had a lot of energy which is the first time in a while for me, but it was a great team effort,” Harrower said.

“Finally we had a great start, we got on top of them early and didn’t let them get back in the game.”

She added six assists and five rebounds to complete the demolition and lead Bendigo into fifth place on the league ladder.

Harrower paid credit to her teammates and said the Spirit is firing at the right time.

“I think our girls have been doing a better job of stepping up in the second half of the season and that’s what we need, we need everyone to contribute if we’re to be successful,” she said.

A regular nominee for the weekly award this season, Harrower also earned the accolade in Round 2.

Harrower leads the league in points per game (24.7) and is also the leading 3-point shooter in the competition, shooting at 42 per cent from beyond the arc. The World Champion is third in the league in assists per game (4.8), third in foul shot percentage (84.2) and, despite standing 163cm, is ranked sixth in defensive rebounds (5.2) and 10th in total rebounds (6.7). Rounding out her all-round game, Harrower is also ninth in field goal percentage (49.4).

Harrower pipped fellow Jayco Opal Liz Cambage for the award. Cambage scored a career high 36 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Bulleen Boomers downed the Dandenong Rangers on Saturday. The 203cm centre nailed 14-of-16 attempts from the floor at 88 per cent.
